As the Thai government further relaxes restrictions on alcohol sales, Chinese alcohol brands are seeing a new window of opportunity to enter the Thai market!
Reports say that from May 11, 2025, Thailand has new rules allowing five types of places to sell alcohol on Buddhist holidays. The government also plans to let convenience stores in tourist areas sell alcohol later to help tourists and increase sales.
At the same time, more Chinese alcohol brands want to export their products to Thailand, a top tourist country. But did you know? Thailand’s rules for importing alcohol are even stricter than you think!

Thailand Relaxes Alcohol Sales Restrictions – Key Highlights of the New Regulations:
According to a statement by Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports the new regulations specify:
1.The alcohol ban on the four big Buddhist holidays still applies.
2.But now, five types of places are allowed to sell alcohol despite the ban:
- International airport departure terminals
- Licensed restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues
- Designated tourist attractions within tourism zones
- Legally registered hotels
- Venues hosting national or international large-scale events
The Minister said that soon convenience stores in tourist areas might be allowed to sell alcohol!
This is great news for Chinese alcohol companies. Thailand is gradually allowing more places to sell alcohol in a careful way. So, now is a good time to export alcohol and follow the rules.
Are You Ready to Export Alcohol to Thailand?
1.Qualifications Required for Local Importers in Thailand
- Registration with the Thai Food and Drug Administration (Thai FDA)
- Alcohol Import License issued by the Thai Excise Department
- Registered warehouse address
- Business license and Tax ID
Only Thai companies with a valid Alcohol Import License can import alcohol through customs. So, Chinese brands should work with a licensed local agent to register products and clear customs.
2.Key Points for Alcohol Product Registration:
- Submit a complete label sample (must include Thai-language information)
- Provide a product test report and ingredient breakdown
- Labels must not contain false claims such as “health benefits”
- The actual alcohol content must match the labeled amount
3.Customs Clearance and Taxation: Hefty Duties to Consider
Thailand charges high taxes on imported alcohol. Besides a 30% import duty, there is an excise tax based on the alcohol amount and the product’s price. On top of that, there are health taxes, local taxes, and a 7% VAT. Altogether, taxes can add up to 80% to 100%. Exporters should carefully check taxes and profits before selling.
Common Pitfalls to Watch Out For
1.Individuals or companies are not allowed to ship alcohol into Thailand via courier services.
2.Products without legally registered labels are not permitted for sale on the market.
3.Online sales platforms must also comply with customs clearance and tax registration requirements.
Thailand’s easing of alcohol sales rules is part of its tourism plan and creates a new, legal way for Chinese brands to grow abroad and follow the rules. Although alcohol is taxed heavily, it can still bring good profits. By working with licensed local agents and following the right steps, Chinese brands have a good chance to succeed in the Thai market.
